It seems like most of the internet marketing community is chasing after the latest short-term way of getting high search engine rankings, but in case you haven’t noticed, this group has thinned out dramatically in the last 8 months or so. After the first few iterations of the Google Panda rollout, people seem unfazed in their determination to make some of these short term tactics. work. It is hard to get results with new website SEO in 2016, and you need to change your mindset and adjust your expectations to get high long term rankings.
How Could A Cute Panda Hurt You? Most of the newbies at building online businesses – including folks putting up eCommerce shops, people offering web services, and affiliate marketers – seemed unwilling to alter their approach to new website SEO – until the Penguin strutted in that is. Mr. Google Panda and Penguin sent literally millions of people packing, and a lot of them revived their earlier careers working in restaurants and retail – or are focusing on fantasy football now.
Building a website from scratch in 2016 has to be a delicate balance of engaging content creation, white hat link building, and social/viral marketing. Most of the folks that ran for the exits first could not come to grips with the fact that paying someone $2 bucks an hour in the Philippines to write 500 word articles for their website pages was not good enough. It was hard for many people to suck it up when Build My Rank and other blog networks collapsed and they saw their organic visitor traffic dropping 90% or more. These short-term tactics simply do not produce decent results nowadays.
The reality of the online marketplace in 2016 is that you have to do a little of a lot of different things. Google really threw the SEO industry for a loop when they basically made it “illegal” to just do 2 or 3 things to promote your site – by penalizing those that take this approach. Now you have to focus on 7-10 different marketing approaches each month, and you have to scale up your efforts in a slow and controlled manner if you really want to be successful. Take the previous route, and you might make a few bucks, but it is really not building a business. It is more like running to the Walmart to stock up on bottled water to sell to folks in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. This success won’t be around long is the point.
Busting out the high PR links on a new site is almost certain death by month three, so you simply must focus on building a large buffer of lower PR, PA or DA backlinks first, that come from a wide variety of different methods. This effectively disguises your higher PR backlinks that an online business might start getting around month four.
Having Realistic Expectations with New Site SEO
You are in a highly scrutinized period during the first 90 days now, and if you set off any red flags with the search engines during that period, you will have to work exponentially harder to achieve high rankings in Google. I know that most people do not want to hear that, but I am not going to BS you and make you think that somehow things are different from this reality. Do you really think that if you set up a barber shop or a hair salon in the real world – that anything would be any different? That you would just open up the doors, ring a bell, and people would start flocking in?
The World Can Be Yours If You Will Give It 3-6 Months. You have to acknowledge that you will most likely not attain respectable rankings for your targeted keywords in the first 3 months, however, with a long-term sound SEO strategy you can start getting ranked in the first 6 months, on average. You simply will not have the domain authority or self-sustaining SEO to see decent rankings much quicker than in 6 months time.
The sooner you realize and embrace this concept, the faster you can get to work building a profitable online presence that will not be dependent on the search engines alone. By chasing internet marketing “guru” crap about getting rankings in a couple of weeks or months, you will undoubtedly create a website that is doomed to fail.
It is not reasonable to think that your website SEO will be able to pay for itself each month, without putting in long term consistent effort and having patience. This is simply not easy to digest and pull off for most people today. The average person has a head full of dreams and illusions about having a business online and building a recurring revenue stream – without having to use a sound business strategy to get there.
You also have to be more careful with your niche selection and keyword research to make any money with a new website. Internet marketing has exploited, and in some cases, even burnt out the customers in a lot of different niches. This does not mean that you can’t make money, it just means that the customers in that niche will demand more value from you before parting with their hard earned cash.
The other really important thing about niche selection is that you will be analyzing the past, current, and future trends of the niche you are considering. You will be going after the niches with the best prospects now and in the future. If your SEO is continually improving and expanding, over time, you will continue to increase the traffic to your site.
Putting up a lot of half-ass content on your site that isn’t engaging and doesn’t really provide value will make everything else you do worthless. Working on new site SEO will do nothing for you but waste your time and money – if the traffic you get quickly leaves your website as soon as they get there. Providing engaging content and real value to your visitors is SEO in 2016.
By properly delivering your content to your visitors in an informational and candid way, you will ultimately be able to make a better connection with them. The high pressure sales tactics don’t work very well online, but providing valuable insight and the negatives you experienced about a product or services does.
Just remember – most people don’t want to be sold anything – but they all want to buy something. Stick to this mantra and your content will be golden. By being frank and open about your opinions, you will develop rapport and trust that will result in higher conversions. You can’t make everyone happy, and for folks running successful online businesses, it has been worth the risk of alienating a few to genuinely connect with like-minded people.
Slower Growth Is a Good Thing
You need to be focused on putting out amazing content during the first 90 days, and developing your sales and product funnels to accommodate the traffic you start getting. If you have an eCommerce site, you will want to get your navigation and shopping cart worked out during this period. If you are not ready for the people you get when your traffic increases, you are spinning your wheels. You should want to get these things in order before really focusing on SEO.
You have to temper your enthusiasm during the first 90 days, because Google is much more sensitive to what you are doing during that time now. You have to be steady and consistent in you content creation and link building. Posting content several times a week and building a few links a day works much better than batch posting content or backlinks does. You need to slowly grow this effort over your first six months, perhaps increasing your efforts by about 20% each month..Hard charging at it from the outset will have negative repercussions in most cases.
Diversification – What New Site SEO Is All About
The truth is that SEO hasn’t changed very much if you are focusing on long-term business success. There are hundreds of new tactics and methods coming out all of the time, and for most people, sticking to one game plan reaps the greatest rewards. If you are unfocused and chasing several different monetization models, you will not likely not be focusing on any strategy enough to get solid results. To reduce your overall business risk, you have to do what real, successful businesses do. You have to diversify your traffic channels, and not depend solely on organic search traffic as your only way of attracting potential customers.
During your first 90 days, make it a priority to set up your social traffic channels. You should set up profiles on a variety of social networks that have both the name of your site, and a link to your homepage. You should start off with the 10 best social sites, but don’t over do it here. I like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Wikihow, YouTube, LinkedIn, eCademy, and XING. Focus on networks that will be around 10 years from now.
Post Longer Articles and Provide True Value. You have to also diversify where your links are going to. You want 70-80% of your links going to your inner pages, where your content is at. Most newbies at internet marketing get this completely wrong, and have 80% of their links going to their homepage, which looks completely unnatural to Google. When people are linking to your site, they will most likely link to an article or post on your site, not to the homepage.
You want to diversify the length of articles on your site. Most marketers like writing short 250-500 word posts, and they are less likely to rank well because of it. You need to vary the length of your posts, and stay within the 700-1000 word per article range. This will set you apart from everyone else, and will be easier to rank with the recent Google Panda and Penguin changes.
Diversifying the anchor text on your links is really important, and failure to do so was the most common reason people lost rankings after Panda/Penguin. You can’t build 200 links to your site, with 198 of them having the same anchor text like “make money online” (which is our primary keyword in this example). You have to vary it up, and have no more than 40-50% of your links with anchor text with keywords in it. So, you ideally want about 40-50% of your links in our “make money online” example to have dozens of different variations of that phrase. You could use “how to make money online”, “make money online today”, “making money online”, etc.. where you have the keyword as part of the anchor text, but not as the exact match for the anchor text.
The other 50% of your links should have so called “junk links”, where there either is no anchor text (with just a URL) , or nonsense words as the anchor text – such as “click here”. “now”, “here”, “download report”, etc…This is how websites “naturally” link to a website, so mix it up and avoid getting slapped in the rankings by Google.
A lot of folks think that this approach is too mild, but I tend to go even more conservative than that. I usually don’t add anchor text at all until the second month, and no high PR backlinks until month four. I focus on getting social signals instead of just building links. It is better to stay conservative, because as soon as you cross the thresholds of what Google thinks is excessive, you will be penalized and set back significantly. I like building about 100-200 links in the first month, and ramp that up about 20-30% each month after.
Use Junk Links To Keep It Natural. You can change the URL into a variety of diversified links too. You can use http:// in the link or not, you can use www. or not, you can have a trailing slash on the end of your URL or not, and you can have your URL with capital letters at the beginning of words or not. Be sure to vary up the way you include the URL in the links, and you will keep it all looking diversified and natural.
Be sure to add content to your website every week. I can’t tell you how many people I speak to that tell me that they put content on their website in batches, and I don’t endorse that method. You can actually schedule it out using WordPress, so this should be a no-brainer.
Other Things to Concentrate On In The First Three Months
WordPress is simply the core of building a website – and is the easiest way to go about building an online business. Even if you are starting an eCommerce site, you can add a WordPress blog to that, and interact with your visitors. Get Google Analytics for your site, set up Webmaster Tools, and make sure you set up the Google XML Sitemaps plugin.
Design your site to have internal linking from your blog posts to your landing and product pages. You will be drawing in visitors with your content, and will have links to the product pages from those. Keep your header thin so more content appears before someone has to scroll down the page. This will improve your rankings, as Google ranks your pages based on how much content you have “above the fold” (before you scroll down). Plan to put an email option on all of your pages. It is best to put this in a sidebar widget, and it will show up on all of your pages.
You Will Be Happier With A Real Business. Building a sustainable online business is much easier when you have strong relationships with your visitors. By offering a free report or email course to your visitors in exchange for their email list, you can then send them a weekly update or newsletter via your email list. You can also recommend products and provide other useful content to them, and build a long term relationship. This can multiply your sales, and it is common for folks to double or triple their sales and visitor value using an email list.
Keep your approach simple, and focus on getting your content on your website. The first 90 days will ultimately determine if your business online will be successful or not, and taking a longer term view of building something that will last is my recommended approach.
